[Blog] The Significance of Saturday. Written by prozach on Wednesday, 4th Nov 2009 14:02
After our first victory at the 15th attempt last Saturday against the Rams, it is probably fair to say that an even bigger test of character will be the result against Reading.
Going without a win for so long became a psychological nuisance, performances against the likes of Sheffield United, Watford, Swansea and Doncaster all deserved better results. But now that we have that elusive first win, the hard work must continue. In my opinion, the game against the Royals on Saturday is an even bigger test of character than the 15 before it. Reading are much like ourselves in many ways - a new manager at the helm in Brendan Rodgers. Again, the supporters probably had a slightly higher expectation than a relegation fight for the 2009/10 season. Win against the fellow strugglers, we will have a two-match winning streak, unbeaten in five games, and we really can push on and upwards out of the bottom three of the Championship. However, a defeat may confirm some supporters' fears that we are indeed confined to a battle of second tier survival this season. It’s imperative that we put a run together now, against teams of a similar league position, and create a run to build momentum. As we have seen this season, momentum, whether it is going for you or against you, can have a massive impact.

A nervous encounter that could go either way. Depression and gloom loom if we lose.

In some ways this blog is stating the obvious, but it summarises things nicely and puts them in perspective. Reading are an interesting comparison - like you say Prozach, they probably had much higher expectations, and have been rudely awakened by having a much tougher season than expected or wanted, much like us. Although concerned, I am confident we will climb out of trouble, as will probably Reading. Just hope that their revival starts AFTER Saturday, because three points at the Madejski will be as good as six in our current situation. And given the usually excellent away support, I think we will win there. The win against Derby, while ugly, cleared a major psychological hurdle. Prior to that we had experienced the full gamut of poor performances/did not deserve to win, good performances/did deserve to win (but didn't), and mediocre performances/could have gone either way games. Following the draw with Watford (deserved to win), the lads' heads probably dropped a bit and we only just scraped a draw at Argyle. Credit to all concerned that we scrapped our way to three points against Derby when heads could have dropped further. The lads have proved to themselves they can take the lead and hold on to it, they can keep a clean sheet, and most importantly they can WIN! And now we can push on. Actually, not just CAN push on .... we MUST push on. COYB!!!

Reading havent won at home all season other than a cup win against Burton so our chances of taking 3 points on Saturday are good, especially considering some of the away performances we have put in this season. We seem to play posession football these days under Keane which works well, home & away and I cant see anything other than 3 points away on Saturday. Lets be optimistic for a change, as Keano said we have a monkey off our back now so lets not think are we going to win, lets know we are going to win-all in the mindset!

Massive match Saturday. Reading have collapsed since last christmas when they looked a good bet for automatic promotion and have gone 15 home league matches without a win although they have picked up the odd away win. The football law of sod says as we finally broke our duck last game, Reading will win Saturday, but hopefully that wont happen. the first goal on saturday will be vitally important as which ever team gets it will have their confidence flying. Reading seem to be in more of a steep decline than us so i'm going for an away win. I'll be there roaring us on....C.O.Y.B!

I think that we actually have a good chance, COYB! It's a 6 pointer though really!

Dreblue - haven't been to Reading for a few years, but as I recall there was a pub next to the station and one over the road. The town centre is a few mins walk away but can't think of any pubs offhand although there are a few there. We used to go to the Hobgoblin on the way to their old ground at Elm Park, but had a scare there one year when we got chased out by a bunch of Reading nuts, lol. That might still be there but I think its a bit out of the way.

Normally a positive fan but ive got mixed feelings for saturday. On the one hand you'd think we'd be full of confidence going into this one with that first win in the bag, but after Reading's win last week, let's not forget they will have that same feeling. Also, they havn't won a league game at home in month's and I always get nervous when I hear stats like that. It's as if fate always put's us into these game's! (Ive just started seeing a bird from Reading as well, so to lose this one could mean I have to tell her to sling her hook!!! LOL) A win will be a fantastic result at Reading, but will it be the end of the world to take a point away from there? As they say, win your home game's, a point on the road is a bonus. But i'll stay positive and predict we scrape it, 11-5!!! COYB!!!

As i recall Reading isnt one of our best grounds but an early Town goal would put them under huge pressure. They played well against Leicester except in the last third when they couldnt break the defence down. Against Coventry they probably had more space so we'll need to defend well and hope to hit them on the break. It could be a tight game

I am a great believer in the law of averages and I used that in our favour on here last week. The boot is on the other foot this week suffice to say I am not at all confident. We just must not lose. Oh and Keano don't change the back 4 or anything else silly like playing Trotter and Peters.
